Your Nursing and Midwifery Council registration is the legal foundation of your work as a nurse, midwife or nursing associate. With busy rotas, crowded inboxes and life happening around shifts, the three-year revalidation date can still sneak up on even the most organised person.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) will remind you as your application window opens, but it is wise to have your own calendar too. Contact details change, emails get buried, and waiting until the final fortnight is a stressful way to renew. This page explains the key dates from the Council, what happens if registration lapses, and how free ReflectRN reminders can sit beside official NMC notices as an extra safety net.
Key dates from the Nursing and Midwifery Council
These definitions come from the Council's own guidance, including Find out your revalidation date and Renewing your registration:
- Three-year cycle: you revalidate every three years to renew registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
- Revalidation application date: the deadline for submitting your application. It is the first day of the month in which your registration expires. Example from the NMC: if your renewal date is 30 April, your application is due on 1 April.
- 60-day window: your online application opens in MyNMC 60 days before that application date. The Council also aims to send a Registration Renewal Notice around then.
- Annual fee: you still need to pay your registration fee every year, even in years when you are not revalidating. Fee expiry and revalidation dates are different things in MyNMC.
Check both dates in your MyNMC account, and keep your email address up to date so official Nursing and Midwifery Council messages reach you. Full process detail sits in How to revalidate with the NMC (PDF) and on the revalidation homepage.
Why an extra reminder helps
Official NMC reminders are important. An independent reminder does not replace them. It simply gives you another nudge while there is still time to finish CPD, write reflective accounts, book a reflective discussion and arrange confirmation.
With ReflectRN reminders activated, you get advance prompts before your window opens, plus nudges to check practice hours, feedback and reflections while the work is still manageable. That is especially useful if your NMC email is not the inbox you check on shift.
What if you miss the Nursing and Midwifery Council deadline?
The Council is clear that if you do not complete revalidation on time, your registration can lapse. You must not practise in a role that requires Nursing and Midwifery Council registration while you are not on the register. For many people that means an immediate stop to registered work, employer action, and a period out of practice while you apply to return.
Returning to the register after a lapse is a separate process from ordinary renewal. Start with the Nursing and Midwifery Council pages on renewing and returning, and contact the Council if you are unsure about your status:
- Renewing your registration
- Submit your revalidation application
- Support to help you revalidate (PDF) if illness, disability, maternity or another life event is getting in the way
The kindest approach is prevention: know your date early, gather evidence across the three years, and submit as soon as your MyNMC window opens.
How to switch on free ReflectRN reminders
- Create a free account at ReflectRN.co.uk.
- Open your account settings.
- Enter your next Nursing and Midwifery Council revalidation date (the date shown in MyNMC).
- Save your settings so email reminders can start.
Then keep using the official route when the window opens: complete the Nursing and Midwifery Council requirements, use the Council's mandatory forms, and submit through MyNMC. ReflectRN can help you organise feedback, CPD and reflections along the way, but your renewal still happens with the NMC.
